General Motors today announced the creation of a new GM Energy business unit, which includes products and services for energy storage and management, stationary batteries for home and business, solar technology, and vehicles for the home and electric grid. Tesla goes beyond making cars to provide customers with energy solutions, GM wants to help you integrate electric vehicles and solar panels into the way you use electricity at home and at work. GM Energy supplies its Ultium Home and Ultium Business products to provide backup power, renewable energy and grid stabilization solutions.
GM promises that electric vehicles and energy products will help stabilize the grid, not burden it. "The reliability of America's power grid has never been more important," said Travis Hester, GM's vice president of electric vehicle development. "GM Energy is in a position to help deliver sustainable energy products and services that help reduce the impact of power outages and provide customers with reliable and cost-effective energy management." For directional charging, stored energy can be used to power homes during power outages or reduce reliance on utilities, or to return electricity to the grid during periods of peak use.
GM Energy is working with several partners to launch the business. He works with utilities such as PG&E, which is piloting a backup power program in California, and with companies such as Edison, GraniteRock and the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative. He has an agreement with SunPower to design and install solar home systems.
Data is also an important part of GM Energy's business. It provides energy management solutions as part of a portfolio of products and services, including software applications and cloud management tools. Its Energy Service Cloud allows customers, electric vehicle owners, fleet owners or other businesses to manage charging and energy consumption.
GM Energy Home and Solar products will be available to customers when the 2024 Chevy Silverado electric vehicle is introduced. Commercial GM products are now available for order.
