This week, Hyundai released details of Hyundai Home, a service that allows electric vehicle owners to purchase charging devices, solar power and home energy storage from a single website.
Announced as the 2021 Home Energy Ecosystem, Hyundai Home is now available in 16 states, according to an announcement at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show. Hyundai said it is monitoring dealer service in those states with the help of the associated company Electrum.

Hyundai Home seems to be primarily an aggregator of home chargers, solar panels, and energy storage systems that customers can buy all at once. It also offers three offers for each installation, coming from the Electrum electrical network. Electrum will also provide an "energy advisor" to guide customers through the process, Hyundai said.
This could be a good solution for consumers who are overwhelmed by the myriad of possible home electrical hardware combinations, but what the Hyundai Home has lacked so far is hardware that meets off-grid capabilities. Vehicles based on this platform, like the Ioniq 5, are equipped with bi-directional charging, which theoretically allows them to dump power into the home's energy storage system as a backup power source in the event of a power outage.

Ford, on the other hand, sells what F-150 Lightning owners need to power their homes in the event of a power outage, though that system doesn't yet take advantage of two-way charging network-assisted capabilities. For years, the Nissan Leaf had two-way chargers available in other markets, but Nissan recently approved a two-way charger for the US Leaf. The automaker says it can reduce strain on the power grid by allowing electric vehicles to remove fluctuations in demand.
That's not the only element of the Hyundai EV push coming to the United States. There is evidence of a wide subscription to its Ioniq electric vehicles. But like Hyundai Home, these things can evolve as the EV lineup grows. The Ioniq 6 sedan is expected to arrive in the United States in the first quarter of 2023, followed by the Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024.
