JAKARTA: Indonesia and the United Kingdom are working together on the Partnership for Accelerated Climate Transformation (UK-PACT) or Towards a Low Carbon Energy Transition in Indonesia (MENTARI) through energy efficiency in the building infrastructure sector.
“While using energy efficiently, we reduce our exposure to it. This must be understood and made one of our collective commitments,” Energy and Natural Resources Minister Arifin Sarif said at the UK PACT launch event here on Monday.
According to Tasrif, energy efficiency is critical due to the national and global energy crisis.
The minister stressed that everyone should understand the issue of greenhouse gas emissions as a task that must be solved jointly by all parties and not just by the government.
Indonesia aims to reduce its emissions by 314 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2030.
In the energy sector, the burden of carbon dioxide emissions is estimated at 290 million tons in 2030 and buildings will contribute 20 million tons of carbon dioxide.
Meanwhile, the ministry's office building is equipped with various technologies to reduce carbon emissions, including a rooftop solar power plant, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy consumption monitoring systems in various rooms.
“We like to use air conditioners and (other amenities) in the office or at home. That should be our concern.”
With the same vision, he hopes that Indonesia's energy efficiency programs such as MENTARI will operate at their best.
He also hoped to start the program to help small electronic industries make thermostats with shut-off systems to save energy and reduce emissions.
“We must spread information about this not only in Jakarta, but also in the regions. Obviously, it requires a huge movement, so how can we convey the idea that saving energy is related to reducing emissions as well as preserving our health and thus saving our healthcare expenses,” the minister explained.
