Man Caught On Camera Stealing Solar Panels From Rolando Home

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As electricity bills and demand for solar power continue to rise, a video of Rolando's solar panel home has surfaced.

Delina Kohn's home on College Avenue doesn't have two large solar panels. Kun and her husband noticed it on their way home.

"I looked at him and he looked like he wanted to scream," Kuhn said.

Security video shows a man get out and search the area just before 8 a.m. Saturday as a white van drives past the park. He leaves and comes back soon.

Take one of the two panels to the side of the house before exiting with a large solar panel mounted on the back of the van The missing solar panels are 6 1/2 feet long and 3 1/2 feet wide

"It's a feeling of possession, as if someone has entered our territory and taken something," Kuhn said.

Koons' husband, who owns solar company Caliber Energy Solutions, said the $500 panels are planned for future residential projects.

“I think it's getting lower and lower for people to make a living. My husband's job provides for our family," Coon said.

Six months ago, Kuhn said, he saw another man in another car outside his home. Her husband manages to scare her off, but not before driving her with three boards.

This is not the first such theft. In 2017, ABC 10 News reported that thieves in the Alps removed the panels installed on them.

It's still a rare crime, but as electricity bills rise, coupled with demand for solar, will panels become a more desirable target for thieves?

"He definitely knew what he was doing," Kuhn said. I don't think it will stop.

A San Diego police spokeswoman said she had not heard of any other similar cases. Anyone with information about this case can contact the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000.
