Savannah Unveils New Solar Panels, Marking Milestone In 100% Clean Energy Plan

Savannah city officials today unveiled a new solar panel installation, marking another milestone in the city's 100% clean energy plan.

Alicia Brown, head of Savannah's clean energy program, told Floyd Adams Jr. said the complex. It is the second of 19 buildings in the city to be equipped with solar panels after the City Council approved the project last summer.

Savannah's 100% Clean Energy Plan outlines the city's goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2035.

Gov. Nick Palumbo said Wednesday that Savannah is a leader in clean energy initiatives.

"Today we are doing more than just saving the planet. It's just about creating a smarter government in these communities,” he said.

Officials said there are no upfront installation costs and the city will pay for the solar panels based on energy production over time.

"Over 25 years, we expect the 19 units to cost about $6 million and save more than that," Brown said.

Palumbo said the program helps the city move away from external energy sources and invest in its sustainable development.

"No matter what the tropical system is and what may happen to us as a city, city operations will continue and thrive," he said.

Brown said the solar initiative is also an investment in clean energy and an investment in the people of Savannah.

Thanks to the city's workforce development program, Savannah residents like Kajuan Washington are learning how to install solar panels, opening new opportunities for future jobs and even entrepreneurship.

“I started getting involved in it. I started liking him, then I liked him," Washington said. "I want to own my own business now because this is the beginning. If I work for him, I can start a business for myself.
