This US Solar Company Is About To Ramp Up Flexible Thinfilm Solar

Thin-film solar panel manufacturer Ascent Solar Technologies announced today that it will relocate its plant in Thornton, Colorado to accelerate the commercialization of industrial-grade perovskite solar modules.

Perovskite solar cells use thin perovskite films to harvest light and can be a cost-effective and efficient energy conversion alternative to traditional silicon-based solar cells.

However, perovskite solar cells still have some durability, environmental and elasticity problems, but the efforts of research groups such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to solve the problems have shown good results in recent years.

So the folks at Ascent decided it was time to take the next step by dedicating the Thornton plant to the development of perovskite solar cells.

Ascent's lightweight flexible solar modules are used in applications such as portable charging, drones and building-integrated photovoltaics and bring the now-patented perovskite solar technology to the industrial scale.

The facility, which Ascent calls a "perovskite center of excellence," will handle $30 million worth of R&D, manufacturing and industrial equipment.

Last week, Ascent announced it had signed a $5 million deal "to acquire the manufacturing assets of a leading European manufacturer of thin-film solar technology and to license its intellectual property portfolio globally."

Ascent Solar President and CEO Jeffrey Max said, “We are fortunate to have a manufacturing facility with this capacity to manufacture and supply innovative perovskite solar PV... Our industrial-scale, lab-scale efficiency gains are game-changing for solar industry.
