The project is part of the plan to generate renewable energy and reduce carbon.

Prime Minister Humza Yousaf visited Nova Innovations in Leith, Edinburgh on Tuesday, where the panels are being tested ahead of launch.

Mr Youssef said: "These panels provide an exciting insight into the potential of Scotland's future energy system and are the first step in harnessing our significant floating solar potential."

In 2016 Nova Innovation installed the world's first network of tidal turbines near Shetland.

The company then received £6.4 million from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) to support the production of innovative renewable energy generators in 2021.

Since then, it has built work areas in Canada, France and Indonesia.

The First Minister said: “The Scottish National Investment Bank's investment in Nova Innovation has helped to expand its manufacturing base here in Leith and is in line with the Scottish Government's priority to support innovative technologies by 2045.

"Scotland is already one of Europe's most advanced centers for testing and proving offshore energy technologies, and I look forward to seeing where the panels will be deployed in the near future."

The official opening of the plant will take place later this year, and an international order of several megawatts is already being prepared.

Simon Forrest, managing director of Nova Innovations, said: “Given skyrocketing electricity prices and growing concerns about security of supply, there is an urgent need for Scotland to harness energy from our rich natural resources.

" Scotland is at the heart of the tidal energy revolution and Novak continues to lead the industry with proven technology and unmatched reliability. With the addition of floating solar panels to our portfolio, we are uniquely positioned to help bring the race to zero."

"We are honored to host the First Minister to discuss the economic benefits, jobs and the role Scotland can play in the global supply of renewable energy."
