Tesla Asks Colorado Customer To Wait 36 Months To Get Solar Panels Damaged In Hailstorm Removed

For the past two weeks, Kimberley Mowat's Erie home has been covered with a large tarp.

“You just walk around and see the damage. We had hail everywhere,” he said.

The hail on May 9 caused extensive damage to the roof of his house and his car, and also broke many solar panels. Due to the incessant rain, water gets inside. She told CBS News Colorado that she had a headache from the storm.

“We can't fix the water damage inside until we know we have a new roof and no more damage,” Mowat said.

Tesla solar panels are installed on the house. Problem? The roof can't be fixed until Tesla removes the panels. But Mowat says that Tesla is not ready to help in time. The panel is still under warranty.

"I had to call Tesla every day because I didn't get an answer," he said.

After two weeks of trying to contact Tesla, Mowat finally heard from a representative on Wednesday. But now the company wants Tesla to sign an agreement that gives it three to six months to move the panels.

“I am disappointed that Tesla has not taken any responsibility,” Mowat said. "Our house doesn't seem to care about water damage and the possibility of future water, and they don't think so."

CBS News Colorado has reached out to Tesla for comment, but they have not responded to our request.

Mowat says he doesn't mind waiting a few weeks for the panels to come out, but months isn't smart. He has already consulted with a lawyer and is considering hiring an outside company to remove the panels, which will likely cost an additional $9,000. Now Mowat is warning others to be careful before buying Tesla solar panels.

"I want to know that they can come here." "After this experience, I will never ride with Tesla again."
