DEWA Selects Preferred Bidder For 1,800MW Solar PV IPP Project

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced today that Abu Dhabi Future Energy PJSC Masdar is the best bidder for the construction and operation of the sixth terminal. The stage has a capacity of 1800 megawatts. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will power up to AED 5.51 billion solar photovoltaic (PV) independent power producing (IPP) modules.

In this sixth phase, DEWA has achieved the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of 1.6215 cents per kWh of any independent DEWA solar project to date. DEWA has received 23 expressions of interest from international applicants to develop this project. The Request for Qualification (RFQ) was subsequently launched on 15 November 2022.

"We are committed to achieving the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and the green economy .” It also supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Carbon Strategy 2050 to ensure that 100% of Dubai's energy capacity comes from clean energy sources by 2050. To achieve this goal, DEWA has launched several major renewable energy projects, including a Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy complex, the world's largest single-site solar park. His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said, using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, it will have a generating capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030, with a total investment of AED 50 billion.

DEWA is committed to completing the construction phases of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in accordance with the highest international standards, using the latest solar energy technologies to accelerate the transition to a sustainable green economy by increasing the share of clean and renewable energy. Once completed, the solar farm will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6.5 million tons per year. The sixth phase of the 1800 MW solar farm using solar panels based on the IPP model will be gradually commissioned from the fourth quarter of 2024. So. The total capacity of commissioned solar projects in the solar park has reached 2427 megawatts. The share of clean energy in Dubai's energy mix is about 16.3% of total installed capacity. Al Tayer added that this percentage will reach 24% in 2026 with the completion of the sixth phase and the remaining phases of establishing the solar energy farm.

The projects of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest monopark in the world, are of great interest to international developers and confirm the confidence of investors in the important projects supported by the Government of Dubai. DEWA has attracted large investments from the private sector and foreign banks in the UAE, which has led to an increase in the flow of money into the economies of Dubai and the UAE. The current total generating capacity of solar power projects in the solar power park is 2427 megawatts. DEWA is building another project with a total capacity of 433 MW. With the sixth phase of the 1,800 MW solar power plant, the total generating capacity will increase to 4,660 MW.
