"Exceeding this threshold ensures that high-efficiency, low-cost photovoltaic systems can be commercialized," write Stefan De Wolff and Erkan Aydin in a related perspective.
In the study, Xin Yu Chin and his colleagues showed that the uniform deposition of a perovskite top cell on a silicon bottom cell with micrometer pyramids (an industry standard configuration) can produce high photocurrent in cells, tandem solar panels.
Chin et al. show that the use of phosphonic acid additives during cell culture not only improves the perovskite crystallization process, but also helps to reduce recombination losses. As a proof-of-concept, the authors produced a device with an active area of 1.17 square centimeters that achieved a certified PCE of 31.2%.Taking a different approach, Silvia Mariotti and colleagues showed that the use of an ionic liquid, piperazinium iodide, improved the band gap and increased charge extraction at the perovskite-trihalide interface and electron transport layer, creating a positive dipole. Using this modification, Mariotti et al. developed a perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell that exhibits an impressive cold junction voltage of up to 2.0 V and a certified PCE of up to 32.5%.
