Under a major new contract, solar power giant Qcells will supply Microsoft with 12 gigawatts (GW) of solar modules for eight years.
Qcells' largest order to date includes the supply of enough solar panels to power more than 1.8 million homes annually, as well as engineering, procurement and construction services. The two companies initially agreed to a 2.5 GW contract in January 2023.
“The expansion of our agreement with Qcell aims to develop the large-scale domestic solar panel production necessary to grow the US economy sustainably,” said Bobby Hollis, vice president of energy at Microsoft. Supply Chains and the Clean Energy Economy.”
Microsoft has a goal of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2025, and building a secure domestic supply chain will help achieve this goal.
In January 2023, Seoul-based Qcells announced that the solar energy provider in Georgia would invest more than $2.5 billion to build the power grid – the largest clean energy investment in the United States since the HELP Act of Inflation. This includes an expansion of the existing solar plant in Dalton, which was completed in October, to create a fully integrated solar manufacturing facility in Cartersville. A facility that will produce finished solar cells, wafers, cells and modules.
Qcells plans to increase total solar module production capacity in Georgia to 8.4 gigawatts this year. This is the only company in the US. with fully integrated silicon manufacturing facilities, from raw materials to finished modules. Solar energy forms the supply chain.
