Solar Panel Problems: What To Know Before Making The Switch

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Solar energy is environmentally friendly and its often touted low energy bill is quite tempting.

But in some cases that's easier said than done. When Eric Boleyn decided to go green, he thought he was doing a good job and saving money.

Bolin says that while using solar panels as an energy source reduces greenhouse gas emissions, it doesn't save you any savings on your energy bill.

In fact, he said the monthly payments have increased.

“I don’t deserve it, I don’t deserve it. It was a real experience, a real struggle,” Bolin said.

In 2022, Bolin went solar and installed panels in his home.

He said he wants to promote sustainability and sees lower energy costs as a benefit.

Instead, he says, he will pay $300 a month for the next 25 years for the panels and associated equipment. When it comes to a monthly energy bill, it's no cheaper than before.

“Of course I pay more for energy than someone who doesn’t have solar panels. If I could do it again, I wouldn’t do it,” Bolin said.

He says he wants to warn people to do thorough research before purchasing solar services, and Duke Energy agrees.

“In my opinion, are you going to buy a car? A lot of people go to Consumer Reports and look at everything on the internet. You should do the same if you want to sunbathe,” the Duke Energy spokesperson said. Randy Wills.

Wills If you are or were a member of a homeowners association, check the rules; Because you may be banned from adding solar panels to your home.

Above all, people want to understand the financial commitment behind the change.

“It's a big financial decision that will stay with you for 20 years,” Wills said.

“If someone says your electric bill will go to zero or these solar panels are free. You know, buyer beware, take it with a grain of salt,” Wills said.

Wills said he doesn't want to encourage people to change. But he said he wanted to make the process transparent.
