First Solar, the largest solar panel manufacturer in the US, today announced that it has inaugurated India's first fully integrated solar power plant.
Located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the plant has a design capacity of 3.3 gigawatts (GW) per year and directly employs 1,000 people. It will manufacture First Solar's 7-series solar panels, developed at its research and development centers in the US and optimized for the Indian market.
This new facility has several unique features. it is home to India's first solar panel processing plant and is also believed to be the world's first solar water extraction facility.
Because the plant is located in an area of high baseline water pressure, it is designed to minimize its impact on local water resources by relying on tertiary treated reverse osmosis water from the city's wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater will not be discharged.
First Solar's sixth operating facility, in Tempe, Arizona, expands the company's global manufacturing footprint in four countries, including the United States, Malaysia and Vietnam.
