Sprawling Solar Portfolio To Offset 90% Of Energy Use For Maryland County Complex

Anne Arundel County Executive Stuart Bateman, officials from Anne Arundel County Public Works (DPW), Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and Standard Solar officially celebrated the completion of a solar project that will bring clean energy to the office. The "Flip the Switch" celebration highlighted the massive project, which combines four parking lots and seven rooftop solar panels that generate 1.3 megawatts of power.

DPW engineers used a $3 million Alternative Energy Resources Program grant from Maryland's Environmental Water and Power Infrastructure Program (EWIP). The EWIP grant represents 73% of the project investment of $4,110,394. The project will meet more than 90% of the complex's current electricity demand.

We want all the electricity used by local utilities to be generated here or purchased as renewable energy by 2030."

Standard Solar has been selected by Anne Arundel County to design and build the parking lot and rooftop solar arrays.

The system is expected to cover more than 90% of the total annual electricity demand of the BUO complex.

The electricity generated by the solar panels will be applied to the group's electricity bill through BGE's Gross Net Counting program. And as the country stores more energy in the pool, solar power could outpace demand. In April, BGE must compensate the district for solar energy not used in the previous 12 months.
